Choosing the Right Solar Package: A B2B Buyer's Guide

There's no single "best" solar package. Like with most business decisions, the right choice depends on your client, their site, and their budget. After managing orders for the last few years, I've seen that the best product fit depends on what the end goal is.

I've handled orders ranging from a single 3000 watt solar kit for a remote off-grid cabin to a multi-megawatt order for a commercial rooftop. Here are the main scenarios I see, and what I'd recommend for each.

The Three Common Scenarios

Most of the decisions I've helped with fall into one of three buckets:

  1. Commercial & Utility Scale: Large rooftops or ground-mounts, 100kW and up.
  2. Residential & Small Commercial: Single-family homes, small businesses.
  3. Off-Grid & Specialty: Cabins, RVs, backup power for remote equipment.

The trick is understanding which bucket your client sits in, and not assuming what worked for one will work for another.

Scenario A: Maximizing Yield Per Square Foot

For commercial projects with limited roof space (think an urban warehouse or a factory), every square inch counts. The priority is the highest possible wattage in a given area.

What I'd suggest: High-efficiency, bifacial modules like the Trina Solar Vertex series. A standard 425W panel is good, but if you have a space constraint, the 595W bifacial modules can be a game changer. You pay more per watt, but you get more total power.

Real talk: I had a client who was set on the cheapest 300W panel they could find for a warehouse roof. The savings looked good on paper. But when we looked at the yearly energy production vs. the cost of the lease on the roof space, the higher-efficiency panel paid for itself in year three. The cheaper panel left a lot of "free" energy on the table (which, honestly, feels like a waste of a good roof).

Avoid: The assumption that cheaper, lower-wattage panels are always more profitable. On a tight roof, the loss in revenue from missed kWh generation easily eats up any initial savings.

Scenario B: The Turnkey Solution

For residential or small commercial installers, the biggest headache isn't the panels—it's everything else. The permitting, the wiring, the inverter selection, the battery integration.

What I'd suggest: A complete system package that includes the inverter and the storage. A customer looking for a 3000 watt solar kit almost always needs the inverter and the racking, and often the battery as well (especially if they want backup power).

Pairing the panels with a Trina Solar inverter and a battery from their battery energy storage system lineup simplifies the client's life. It also reduces the risk for the installer—if there's a compatibility issue, there's one point of contact.

My experience: In 2024, one of my regular vendors tried to go for a cheaper unbranded inverter for a 50kW residential project. It worked fine for three months, then it kept dropping offline. The back-and-forth between the panel warranty team, the inverter support, and the installer was a nightmare. The client was unhappy, the installer was stressed, and the time wasted cost everyone money.

To avoid this: Stick with a full system. The upfront cost might be a few percent higher, but the ease of installation and warranty coverage is worth its weight in gold.

Scenario C: The Low-Budget/Hassle-Free Install

There are clients who just want the cheapest, simplest system to offset their bill. They don't care about cutting-edge efficiency or complex battery setups. They want the lowest cost-per-watt and a quick install.

What I'd suggest: A standard 72-cell or 60-cell module, like a standard Trina Solar 425W or 400W panel, paired with a string inverter. No microinverters, no optimizers, no batteries. Keep it simple.

Here's the catch: People often think that buying a "solar kit" with a microinverter is always better because it handles shading. That's not always true. For a clean, south-facing roof with no shade, a standard string inverter is simpler and cheaper. The newest microinverters aren't always the best solution for every roof.

How to Guide Your Client

Here's a simple way to figure out which scenario they belong to:

  • Do they have tight space constraints? → Go for Scenario A (high-efficiency, bifacial modules).
  • Are they new to solar or looking for a simple, single-brand solution? → Go for Scenario B (a full system with inverter and storage).
  • Is their main concern just getting the lowest price per kWh? → Go for Scenario C (standard panels with a string inverter).

I'm not 100% sure there's a perfect formula, but this framework has saved me from making a few bad recommendations. The most important thing is to listen to the client's actual pain point. A lot of installers go into a conversation thinking they'll sell the fanciest new bifacial panel, when the client just wants something that works and won't break the bank.
