Yes, and this is the question installers tend to avoid because insulation work feels outside the solar scope. But energy storage and insulation are two sides of the same problem: the customer wants to run their home on stored solar energy for as long as possible.

If the house leaks heat, the heat pump or AC runs twice as long. That means the battery discharges by 8 p.m. instead of 11 p.m. A smart meter will show that pattern clearly. The peak cooling load happens in the late afternoon, but the house never really recovers until the whole wall assembly cools down.

Insulation doesn't have to be a whole-house retrofit. One reasonable attic sealing project in a leaky house can cut AC run time more than a large battery would, for a fraction of the cost. That's not an attack on storage. It's the opposite: if you reduce the load, a smaller battery gets you better behavior. The customer gets more value from the whole system.

The small-friendly part: don't tell a homeowner they need a minimum $15,000 energy upgrade before solar makes sense. Start with the smart meter data, fix the worst leak, then size storage around the new load profile.

6. Can a small order really get a Trina Vertex emergency replacement in 48 hours?

  • Is the battery in a self-consumption mode, and is the household load over the discharge limit?
  • Is the smart meter configured for net import/export, or is it showing gross consumption? The difference can double your apparent usage.

If the data still conflicts, ask the utility for the interval data from their head-end system, not the display in the garage. That is the authoritative source. Then compare it to your inverter's logs. Once I saw a mystery 4 kW load turn out to be a neighbor using a shared exterior outlet. The meter sorted it out.
