I'm not an engineer. I manage procurement for a 45-person solar installer, and I place roughly $2.8 million in module and inverter orders every year. I report to both the ops director and the finance director, which means I'm the person who has to explain why we chose one module over another.

In practice, the promise is only worth something if the company issuing it still exists, still cares about its brand, and has the financial strength to replace or repair failed modules.

  • Which company backs the performance warranty, and does it have the balance sheet to survive a down cycle?
  • Where are the modules manufactured, and can I verify the factory's quality control process?
  • Does the warranty cover power output only, or also workmanship, materials, and appearance?
  • What is the actual claim process? Who answers the phone in year 6?
  • Does the degradation curve in the warranty match the datasheet and real-world field data?

None of these steps guarantee a perfect module. But they push me toward manufacturers with real factories, clear names, and warranty language they can defend.
